Tudor Minute August 8: Margaret Tudor gets married

Hey, this is Heather from the Renaissance English History Podcast, and this is your Tudor Minute for August 8.

Today in 1503 Margaret Tudor was married to James IV of Scotland in Holyroodhouse. Margaret was also the daughter of Henry Tudor and Elizabeth of York - so she was Henry VIII’s sister. She was still young and her marriage was designed to help bring peace between Scotland and England, who were so often at war. The 16th century would be perilous for the Scots. James himself was killed in 1513 at the Battle of Flodden. His son, James V, was also killed after a battle, in that case the Battle of Solway Moss in 1542. Then his granddaughter, Mary Queen of Scots, was beheaded by Elizabeth I.

However, it was with James and Margaret’s great grandson, James VI of Scotland, that the dream of a united England and Scotland finally came true. After the death of Elizabeth, 100 years after their wedding, James VI of Scotland became James I of England.

That’s your Tudor Minute for today. Remember you can dive deeper into life in 16th century England through the Renaissance English History Podcast at englandcast.com where there is a recent episode devoted solely to Margaret Tudor.
