Tudor Minute July 17: Happy Birthday Richard Carew

Hey, this is Heather from the Renaissance English History Podcast, and this is your Tudor Minute for July 17.

Today in 1555 Richard Carew was born in Cornwall. He would become an antiquarian, translator, and poet.

This is from the BBC: Carew trained as a lawyer, held most county offices and was an Member of Parliament. He spent his lifetime collecting noteworthy facts about Cornwall, publishing the first part of his Survey  in 1602. The Survey describes the Cornish landscape, mining, farming, fishing, communications and recreations including hurling. Among many interesting vignettes are West Cornwall’s matmakers – women and children – who sold their wares in London. The rest of Carew’s survey tours the nine Cornish hundreds noting natural features, curiosities, towns and gentlemen’s estates.

That’s your Tudor Minute for today. Remember you can dive deeper into life in 16th century England through the Renaissance English History Podcast at englandcast.com
