Hey, this is Heather from the Renaissance English History Podcast, and this is your Tudor Minute for April 2.
Today Arthur Prince of Wales died at Ludlow Castle, just 15 years old. Arthur often plays bit parts in history because of everything that happened during Henry’s reign, but it’s important to remember that he was the heir to the throne, married to the Spanish princess, and his parents were devastated. No one knows exactly what happened to him, but theories range from the sweating sickness to consumption. Catherine also got sick, but she recovered. For Henry’s parents, though, it was the beginning of a terrible year. Elizabeth of York and Henry VII conceived another child quickly, but Elizabeth would die in childbirth less than a year later. Henry Tudor, the second son, became the heir, and his life – and English history – changed forever.
That’s your Tudor Minute for today. Remember you can dive deeper into life in 16th century England through the Renaissance English History Podcast at englandcast.com.
