Hey, this is Heather from the Renaissance English History Podcast, and this is your Tudor Minute for December 14.
Today in 1542 James V of Scotland died, after becoming ill when his army was defeated at the Battle of Solway Moss about three weeks before. He had already taken to his bed when his wife, Marie of Guise, gave birth to their daughter, Mary. It’s said that he responded to the news of the birth of his daughter by saying, “it came with a lass, and it will end with a lass,” refering to how the Stuart dynasty began with a girl, Robert the Bruce’s daughter Marjorie, and that it would now end with Mary. Of course it did not work out the way he feared, as his grandson James VI would become James I of England, and unite both countries.
That’s your Tudor Minute for today. Remember you can dive deeper into life in 16th century England through the Renaissance English History Podcast at englandcast.com.
