Tudor Minute May 30: Henry Marries Jane

Hey, this is Heather from the Renaissance English History Podcast, and this is your Tudor Minute for May 30.

Today in 1536 Henry married his third wife, Jane Seymour, in a ceremony in the Queen’s Closet in York Place officiated by Archbishop Cranmer - you can only imagine how Cranmer must have felt doing this just a few weeks after the fall of his previous friend and ally Anne Boleyn. He was betrothed to Jane the very day after Anne Boleyn was executed, and then married her ten days later.

It had only been a few weeks since Anne had been Queen, and workers had to work hard to replace Anne’s initials and emblems with Jane’s own Phoenix badge. In some cases the workers didn’t quite finish the job, and you can still see A’s beneath the J’s in some places at Hampton Court.

That’s your Tudor Minute for today. Remember you can dive deeper into life in 16th century England through the Renaissance English History Podcast at englandcast.com.
